Community Philanthropy

As part of the Foundation's strategic plan we are focused on executing our core functions to reach all of the communities within the county, as the needs and interests of the people in those communities dictate. One method to achieve that objective is the creation of Committee Advised Funds that serve geographic areas within the county. These Committee Advised Funds allow organizations and associations to establish a fund for charitable giving and grant making. Donors may make contributions to the fund in any amount, at any time and the Committee then advises the Community Foundation on grants to be made from the fund.  Below is a list of our more active Committee Advised Funds and their general purpose.

Environmental Endowment Fund
This fund makes grants that support: environmental education; sustainable communities; land use planning efforts; protection and restoration of watersheds, green spaces, water quality, shoreline, dune areas, and wildlife habitat; Recycling efforts to reduce pollution and waste; and to support alternative energy innovations, green design standards, and sustainability principles.

White Lake Community Fund
This fund makes grants to White Lake area organizations and projects that benefit the residents of White Lake. Community assets, dating back to the 1950's to support the construction of a hospital, marked the origins of the White Lake Community Fund (WLCF). In 1974, these funds were re-purposed to support community projects in the White Lake Area and transferred in 1979 to the Foundation to administer. The WLCF is supported by gifts and bequests from a wide range of donors - both permanent and summer-time residents - who all share a common commitment to the White Lake community. The WLCF celebrated its 30th year in 2009 and has granted over $436,000 since inception.

Fruitport Education Foundation Fund
This fund makes grants to support Fruitport schools. The #1 short-term goal identified in a strategic plannning process by Fruitport Schools in 2005 was to create a Fruitport Schools Foundation. With support from Gene Young, retired Fruitport Community Education Director, a group of dedicated Fruitport residents united for a common purpose: to provide financial assistance for Fruitport students via scholarships and to support a strong education system. From the first gift in November 2005, this fund reflects the passion and determined efforts of the seventeen Fruitport Education Fund (FEF) board members.

Ravenna Community Educational Foundation Fund
This fund makes grants to support Ravenna schools. A conference attended by the Ravenna Public School Board in 2007 sparked the idea to start a school foundation to support community schools. A design team of community members quickly organized and before they could even put their mission statement down on paper - donors came forward enthusiastically supporting the fund. The design team recognized that their local schools (both public and private) are important to the vitality of their community and they wanted a vehicle to distribute financial resources for the benefits of students and staff. This Fund will focus its support on student development, encouraging creative learning and staff teaching programs, and also promote community/school partnerships.
