Community Foundation for Muskegon County
2003 Scholarship Recipients

The Seyferth Scholar
The Seyferth Scholar will receive a total of $20,000 over four years. This award is given to the applicant with the highest academic credentials in the County.

Peter Barkett
A graduate of Mona Shores High School , Peter will be attending Yale University , majoring in bio-physics.

This most prestigious scholarship was made possible by a gift from the Thomas and Geraldine Seyferth fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and honors the donor's belief that investing in a student's education is still the greatest commitment a community can make to its future. As a member of one of the early industrialist families in Muskegon , the donor wished to benefit the youth of the community that had been so good to him and to his family.

The Hawley Merit Scholars
The Fred T. and Gladys V. Hawley Merit Scholarship awards $5,000 over four years to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.

MacKenzie Smith
MacKenzie graduated from Montague High School and will be attending Hope College , majoring in political science.

Gabriel Yoder
Gabe graduated from Whitehall High School and will be attending the United States Air Force Academy, majoring in pre-law.

Fred T. Hawley and his wife Gladys were longtime residents of Muskegon . Hawley taught at Muskegon Community College and served as Athletic Director. After their only son died the Hawleys decided to leave their estate to the Community Foundation in order to establish a Scholarship fund. Through the creation of this Scholarship fund the Hawleys will continue to grant the lasting gift of education to students of the Muskegon community.

The Moylan Scholars
The Ernest D. Moylan Scholarship is $5,000 over four years. Students receiving this scholarship must have excellent academic standing and attend Muskegon Community College before transferring to a four-year university to finish their education.

Alysia Kieft
Alsia graduated from Ravenna High School and will be attending MCC, majoring in business.

Holly TenBrink
Holly graduated from Reeths-Puffer High School and will be attending MCC, majoring in psychology.

Ernest Moylan, although a Muskegon resident, had interests in a Texas oil concern, which became very profitable and left Mr. Moylan with more money than he wished. Perfectly content living on his pension, Mr. Moylan decided to give the money from the oil interest to the Foundation in the form of a scholarship. To the credit of Ernest Moylan, countless numbers of Muskegon 's finest students will be rewarded through the lasting gift of education.
